    Kalki R. Krishnamurthy (1899-1954) is a legendary Tamil writer, journalist, critic, poet, and Indian independence activist. Writing under the pen name Kalki, he shaped modern Tamil popular literature through historical novels, social novels, essays, reviews, and magazine journalism. He co-founded the Tamil weekly Kalki in 1941 and made serial fiction a major reader culture in Tamil.

    His best-known works include Ponniyin Selvan, Sivagamiyin Sapatham, Parthiban Kanavu, Thyaga Bhoomi, and Alai Osai. Ponniyin Selvan remains one of the most loved historical novels in Tamil, while Alai Osai won the Sahitya Akademi Award after his lifetime. For many readers, Kalki is the natural starting point for Tamil historical fiction.
